Maternity Services

babyandgirl1.jpgThe CMH Birthing Center is the only facility in the Columbia Coast area to offer 24 hour-a-day staffing by specially trained maternity nurses. Located through the west entrance of the hospital, the unit has four home-like birthing suites, which accommodate patients throughout delivery, labor, postpartum and recovery. Available are also an exam/triage room, and an OB Surgical Suite with post-operative recovery room and a nursery.

The unit offers:

  • A Labor & Delivery area admitting patients for a variety of reasons such as suspected labor, illness during pregnancy, assessing high-risk issues or labor and some outpatient procedures.
  • The skilled nursing staff is ready to provide for many special infant needs as well as for the mother.
  • Our birthing suites can accommodate families through the birthing process.
  • Baby stays with mother at all times unless mother has a special request for the nurses to watch the baby for a short period of time.
  • Mother and baby are not moved from the birthing suite unless volumes are high and demand for a birthing room dictates a move to one of our private post-partum rooms.
  • Father or support person may sleep in the room with mother and baby.
  • We offer tours of our Birthing Center, childbirth education classes, breast feeding support groups and referrals to care providers.
  • We also provide a New Baby photo service on our web site. Parents must sign a release form. Parents will be given a password that they can give to loved ones. Your babies picture will be available to anyone that you choose to share the password with.

Nurses are available by phone anytime to answer questions and provide reassurance. All staff nurses are trained in neonatal Advanced Life Support and stabilization of neonates . A rapid response team from specialists in Portland are available for any high risk situation for mother or baby. Life Flight or ambulance services may be utilized depending on the need of the patient.
