Rehabilitation Services
The Columbia Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Department offers a comprehensive rehabilitation program with a team of specialists. Treatment is provided for patients with mobility, communication, and self-care deficits.
Our staff consists of licensed physical therapists, licensed physical therapist assistants, licensed and certified speech-language pathologists, licensed occupational therapists, licensed certified occupational therapy assistants and licensed massage therapists.
The ultimate goal of our staff is to help our patients return to active and productive lives in the community.
Services
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is the treatment of pain, disease, or injury by physical means and is concerned with the promotion of health and prevention of physical disabilities.
In Physical Therapy we treat patients of all ages with a wide range of needs:
- Pediatrics - Exercise programs to help a child progress through normal developmental sequences.
- Pain Disorders - Through the use of modalities and exercise, Physical Therapy can reduce pain and improve functional mobility.
- Sports Injury - Assisting the athlete in regaining the strength and agility to compete after injury.
- Balance & Coordination - Programs to reduce the risk of falls and gain independence.
- Orthopedics - Treating those persons with joint and spine problems with a variety of methods.
- Neurological Rehabilitation & Muscle Re-education - especially after a stroke or brain injury, to return to independent living.
- Aquatic Therapy - The buoyancy of water allows people of all ages and all diagnoses to exercise and stretch with less physical effort and greater freedom of movement.
- Wound Care - Removal of devitalized tissue and appropriate dressing changes to improve wound healing.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy uses a variety of techniques to increase independent function in self-care, work and leisure activities; enhance development of motor and cognitive skills; and prevent disability in persons of any age.
Occupational therapy can:
- Increase independence in activities of daily living and related self care skills (grooming, dressing etc.).
- Assess and treat cognitive function relating to life skills such as money management, meal planning, meal preparation, and job skills.
- Build, fit, and instruct patients in the use of upper extremity splints.
- Provide adaptive equipment to maintain or increase independence.
- Assess living environment for safety hazards and environmental barriers.
- Aid in maintaining and improving endurance through energy conservation and work simplification.
- Assist in normal development in children and stimulate early learning to promote age appropriate skills.
Speech Therapy
Speech and Language pathology is a health science dealing with the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, cognitive, voice, swallowing, and oral-motor disorders.
Persons who can benefit from Speech Therapy may have:
- Voice disorders secondary to injury, disease, surgery.
- Communication and comprehensive disorders following head injury or stroke.
- Difficulty with coordination and strength of facial muscles including the tongue.
- Articulation problems; stuttering.
- Swallowing problems or need of swallowing evaluation (including modified barium swallow).
The above difficulties may be present in patients of any age. In children, speech therapy can also be beneficial for tongue thrust problems or in the case of speech and language delay as a result of hearing loss or developmental disorders.
Message Therapy
Massage therapy has become an important part of general health care for many people living in today’s stressful world.
We at Columbia Memorial Hospital recognize that therapeutic massage can play an important role in treating illness or chronic ailments, and contribute to a higher sense of general well being.
Currently we offer 15-minute chair massages focused on the upper back, neck and shoulders.
It is important that your provider know what medications you are on. Please click here and download a copy of our Medication Information Form. Fill it out and bring a copy with you when visiting any healthcare provider. It is a good idea to make copies of the form and carry one with you at all times.
