Services: Cardiac rehabilitation

Columbia Memorial Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program helps people who have heart disease or have experienced a cardiac event by providing Phase II and III cardiac rehab services to patients from the northern Oregon coast and surrounding areas. Cardiac rehab will help you recover faster and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease risk factors by providing a multifaceted approach consisting of monitored exercise, nutritional and lifestyle education, and support. Our department is equipped with a wide variety of cardio and strength-training equipment to meet the variety of needs and limitations of our patients.

Our staff

Cardiac rehab is medically supervised by a clinical exercise physiologist and a registered nurse, both trained and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Phase II cardiac rehab

Phase II focuses on individualized exercise program; exercise progression; goal setting and tracking; healthy lifestyle and behavior change education; and monitored vital signs during rest and exercise. Phase II requires a physician referral and is typically covered by medical insurance. Patients are monitored during every session with EKG telemetry. Exercise sessions typically last 1 to 1 1/2 hours and are done three times a week for 12 weeks. Patients qualify if recovering from:

  • Recent heart attack.
  • Coronary bypass surgery (CABG).
  • Stable angina.
  • Angioplasty (PTCA)/stent.
  • Heart or heart/lung transplant.
  • Valve repair or replacement.

Phase III cardiac rehab

Phase III is an independent exercise program that is medically supervised by cardiac rehab staff. Phase III exercise times are available during normal operating hours and focus on individualized exercise programming and goal setting. Patients qualified for Phase III include anyone with heart failure and those with diagnosed cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol).

Our approach: Multidisciplinary and progressive

A custom exercise regimen is developed based on initial intake information and functional exam results, and it is progressed throughout the patient's participation. Exercise is medically supervised by an exercise physiologist trained in cardiac care. Patients are continuously monitored with state-of-the-art EKG technology. Cardiovascular fitness through exercise can decrease the risk of a heart attack by 50 percent.

We actively promote and assist in comprehensive healthy lifestyle and behavior change through education sessions provided as a component of regular class. Guidance regarding exercise and balanced nutrition will help you lose weight and make healthier food choices aimed at reducing your intake of fat, sodium and cholesterol. Additional topics include reading food labels, benefits of regular exercise, home exercise programs, stress and emotions, hypertension, diabetes management, and smoking cessation.

Adjusting and recovering from a serious health problem often takes time and support. Participants in cardiac rehab receive vital support from others who are going through the same experiences in addition to staff, family and friends. Emotional support is an essential component in successful management of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac rehab will help you rebuild your life physically, mentally and emotionally.
