CMH caregiver art featured at RiverSea Gallery
Pottery created by local artist Richard Rowland and CMH Project Director Randy McClelland will be featured at RiverSea Gallery starting this Saturday during the Astoria Artwalk.
Richard’s and Randy’s work will be available to view from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday. They will be at the gallery for its opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will be displayed until early January.
Both artists will discuss the exhibition and the history of the kiln during Carol Newman’s show ARTS - Live & Local show at 3:30 p.m. today. Listen at KMUN 91.9 FM or at kmun.org.
Richard and Randy have worked together for more than 20 years. They will present wood-fired ceramics for their two-person show “Ahikaaroa: Under the Beaver Moon.” The show features freshly unloaded pieces that Richard and Randy created using the anagama firing process. The method requires artists and volunteers to prepare eight cords of wood, load a kiln for three days, fire the kiln for six days, then wait two weeks while the pieces cool.
“I need to make work that matters — not just to me, but to the rest of humanity,” Randy says.
Richard's and Randy’s art is displayed throughout CMH. Richard created the ceramic mosaic mural displayed in the CMH-OHSU Knight Cancer Collaborative, as well as the Labyrinth garden sculpture. Richard and Randy have also created coffee mugs for cancer patients since 2011.
As a Planetree gold-certified hospital, CMH values artwork as an integral part of the healing process for patients. CMH features many local artists’ work, showcasing the beauty and history of the Lower Columbia Region.
