Mako SmartRobotics™ system advancing surgical options on the Oregon Coast

Yesterday, CMH-OHSU Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. Douglas Abbott completed the first two total joint replacement surgeries on the Oregon or Washington Coast using the Mako SmartRobotics system.

The Mako has been the market-leading total joint robotic surgery technology since its launch on the market in 2006. It combines three key components, 3D CT-based planning, AccuStop™ haptic technology and insightful data analytics, into one platform that has shown better outcomes for total knee, total hip and partial knee patients.

“With the Mako, I know more about my patients than ever before, and I’m able to cut less. For some patients, this can mean less soft tissue damage; for others, greater bone preservation,” Abbott says. “Mako’s 3D CT allows me to create a personalized plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy before entering the operating room. During surgery, I can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan.

“Yesterday’s surgeries help launch a new era in our surgical abilities on the Oregon Coast. It’s exciting to offer this transformative technology in Astoria, across the joint replacement service line.”

The closest nearby Mako units are in the Olympia, Wash., or Portland metro areas.

“We are proud to be the first hospital on the Oregon or Washington Coast to offer this highly advanced technology to our community,” says Nicole Williams, COO. “This addition to our orthopedic service line further demonstrates our commitment to provide the region with outstanding health care.”
