CMH is pleased to welcome John Moon, MD, PhD, MS, DDS, FACS, as a new general surgeon in the CMH-OHSU Health General Surgery Clinic.
“I have practiced for more than 20 years ... I am very appreciative of the opportunity to serve the community of Astoria,” Dr. Moon says. “During my surgical career, I have learned that the highest responsibility is when your patients place their trust in you. I will always try to earn the trust and faith that they give you. Early in my career, a patient of mine told me [something] that resonated through the years of practice. She said, "I don't expect you to be perfect, but I expect you to care." I have tried to live by these words since then and will continue to practice with compassion.”
Dr. Moon previously worked as a general surgeon and director of surgery at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Group - Surgical Care in Easton, Maryland. His surgical areas of interest include thyroid, breast cancer, skin cancer, abdominal wall reconstruction, hernias, diaphragmatic, gastric and colorectal surgery. Dr. Moon specializes in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for gastric and colorectal oncology surgery, single-site cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, including hiatal hernia repair and Nissen fundoplication.
Dr. Moon has several degrees beyond his bachelor’s degree, including:
- Doctor of Dental Surgery, Ohio State University – College of Dentistry, Columbus, Ohio
- Masters of Science in Pathology, Ohio State University – Department of Pathology, Columbus, Ohio
- Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy (MD/PhD combined program) in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Louisiana State University, New Orleans, Louisiana
“When I started my career path, I was in a dental residency for oral maxillofacial surgery. During this phase, I realized that I preferred general surgery more because the necessity of the surgeries was more essential,” Dr. Moon explains. “The diseases and maladies you could treat seemed more impactful to the patient.”
Dr. Moon completed his residency in general surgery at the State University Of New York/SUNY in Brooklyn, New York. He completed his fellowship in bariatric/advanced laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery at the Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York.
Dr. Moon is board-certified by the American College of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has a surgeon certification with the da Vinci® Surgical System Console.
