Creating childcare
Childcare has been a critical issue for Clatsop County families in recent years. Since 2020, the county has lost more than 1,000 childcare spaces.
In response, CMH has worked with regional partners, such as Providence Seaside Hospital and County leaders, to find sustainable solutions for families.
Nicole Williams, Chief Operating Officer, and Mark Kujala, CMH Foundation Director, have worked diligently to help solve the county’s childcare issue. They both serve on the Clatsop County Childcare Taskforce, Advisory Committee and Grant Review Committee. This work has led to an increase of 150 childcare spaces in the community, as well as financial support for childcare providers.
“The closures of childcare centers in our community have caused great concern for CMH and for our caregivers,” Williams says. “Having access to childcare is necessary to support a growing workforce and community. CMH will continue to be engaged and involved in finding a resolution to this issue.”
The taskforce has been working to find major grants that will be awarded and monitored. Licensed childcare providers can apply for small- or large-scale grants.
In 2022, CMH committed more than $50,000 in funds to the county’s childcare grant program. CMH also financially supported Astoria’s Lil’ Sprouts and Bumble Art Studio daycare. CMH pledged ongoing funding for the grant program and local childcare centers.
Qualifying employees at CMH may receive a childcare stipend. This progam has helped offer assistance to 44 caregivers.
We look forward to helping improve and increase Clatsop County’s childcare offerings in 2023 and the years beyond.
