A 2023 recap of diversity, equity and inclusion at CMH

CMH has increased its investment in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) training in recent years. In 2023, all of CMH’s caregivers completed DEI training.

This training expanded on previous DEI trainings that caregivers completed in 2021 and 2022.

Work to increase inclusion of all people at CMH continues to move forward. Below is a timeline of recent key events that have taken place as CMH works toward improved DEI efforts for patients, caregivers and visitors to our campus.

In 2023:

  • The Planetree Caregiver Council voted to update the CMH Cares “I statements” to include elements of equity and inclusion of all people.
  • DEI training was incorporated into New Caregiver Orientation.
  • The Health Literacy Task Force was formed and began meeting to review patient-facing documents for literacy inclusion.
  • As a result of our Planetree site visit, Planetree commended CMH for the work done to improve DEI, commenting that the work done here surpasses that of many larger and metropolitan organizations.
  • CMH’s leadership team included expansion of DEI initiatives as part of the 2023 Operational Priorities.
  • Leaders at CMH began meeting with the newly created OHSU Health Equity team.
  • Members of the CMH leadership team completed additional DEI training as part of their quarterly Leadership Retreats.
  • CMH made its fifth annual donation to Astoria Pride events.
  • Caregiver retreats focusing on unconscious bias and honoring preferences were held for all CMH caregivers.

CMH is also continuing to prioritize DEI in the BuildCMH Expansion Project. The expansion facility, which will break ground later this year, will have several features to improve accessibility for all patients and caregivers.

Having a thoughtfully designed and inclusive facility will be supportive of our entire community. We are finding that incorporating DEI into the expansion has resulted in enhanced safety, comfort and privacy for all people.
