Annual Report 2023 A year in review

A recap of 2023

2023 was an incredible year for CMH.

Our strategic goals include the following:

  • Provide the highest quality, safest care of any health care organization
  • Grow health care services to meet the needs of the region
  • Improve community health and wellness
  • Remain the best place to work
  • Ensure long-term sustainable financial health

Throughout the year, CMH caregivers worked hard to meet these goals. That work paid off: We were honored to receive our second gold certification through Planetree, marking our fourth certification under the organization. Our facility also earned a handful of other certifications and awards though organizations such as the Accreditation Commission for Health Care.

Growing orthopedic services in our area

After 15 years of providing orthopedic care in Astoria, we were excited to launch an expanded program in 2023. In July, our Stryker Mako SmartRobotics system was delivered, making CMH the only hospital with this market-leading total joint technology on the Oregon and Washington coasts.

We also welcomed a new orthopedic surgeon, Daniel Fabiano, MD, to the CMH-OHSU Health Orthopedic Clinic. Dr. Fabiano has more than 25 years of orthopedic experience in total joints, knees, hips, shoulders, trauma and general orthopedics.

BuildCMH Expansion Project reaches significant milestone in 2023

CMH caregivers, leaders and community members have been involved with the BuildCMH Expansion Project since the beginning. In 2023, much of this collaboration was focused on the project’s design development phase.

During this phase, the architecture and design team worked with CMH departments and community members to finalize project plans, select construction materials, and choose a final interior and exterior design for the hospital.

Pediatric Clinic moves to a new home in 2023

Patients of the CMH-OHSU Health Pediatric Clinic in Astoria are now being seen by their pediatrician in a new location after a move in April 2023. But don’t worry – the clinic did not go far!

The clinic is now housed on the second floor of the east side of the Park Medical Building, just across the street from its previous home in the CMH Health & Wellness Pavilion. The address is 2158 Exchange St., Ste. 206/207, Astoria, OR, 97103.

Swing Bed Care provides flexibility and freedom for patients

Not every patient is ready to go home from the hospital right away. CMH’s Medicare-certified Swing Bed Program offers continued care to support patients with transitioning from a hospital stay to the next stage of their recovery.

The program expanded in 2023 to be available to more patients than ever before. As a result, CMH’s number of swing bed patients grew by 99%.

2023 campaign shares what caregivers love about their jobs at CMH

In June of 2023, HR kicked off a new campaign featuring CMH caregivers who love what they do. Each month since, hundreds of caregivers have participated in fun “thank you” events, such as ice cream socials and giveaways. Many CMH caregivers have also taken the time to share why they love working at CMH and have been featured on CMH social media channels, in the Health Compass newsletter and elsewhere.

Within recent years, CMH has invested in expanding its security systems to improve caregiver and patient safety.

CMH maintains strong financial health in 2023

One of CMH’s Strategic Plan goals is to ensure long-term financial health. This goal is broken down into three categories:

  • Maintain CMH’s A- bond rating.
  • Expand the CMH Foundation to increase philanthropic benefits to the organization and the community CMH serves.
  • Provide annual education for all leaders.

In 2023, CMH met all three of these goals.

BuildCMH Expansion Project hits major fundraising milestones in 2023

The BuildCMH Expansion Project is the culmination of a long-term strategic growth plan set by the hospital’s Board of Trustees. With this project, we need support and help from our neighbors. That’s why we launched a capital campaign in 2023 to raise $10 million by the end of 2026.
